Tier Lists for Book Clubs: A Better Way to End the Year
Turn your book club's year into a tier list. A simple format for ranking every book you read together — and the conversations it sparks.
By Tier List Maker Team ·
Most book clubs end the year the same way: someone asks “which was your favourite?”, everyone says “hard to choose”, and the conversation fizzles. A tier list fixes that.
Why it works
Ranking twelve books in strict order is exhausting. Sorting them into tiers is easy — and the disagreements are far more interesting than any single favourite.
The format
- Before the meeting, paste every book you read this year into the text tier list maker, one title per line.
- Everyone ranks privately and shares a link to their list.
- At the meeting, compare boards. Start with the book that has the widest spread — the one somebody put in S tier and somebody else put in F.
- Finish with a group list you all agree on, and export it for next year’s reference.
S Re-read
A Recommend
B Finished it
F Did not finish
Tier names that suit books
Swap S-to-F for labels like “Re-read”, “Recommend”, “Finished it”, “Did not finish”. Click any tier label to rename it.
Bonus rounds
- Rank the year’s best characters.
- Rank the snacks someone brought.
- Rank next year’s shortlist to pick what to read first.
A tier list doesn’t replace the discussion — it gives it a starting point.
