How to Host a Tier List Night with Friends

Turn rankings into a social event: a simple format for a fun, argument-filled evening.

Friends gathered around a screen showing a tier list

Tier list nights are part game night, part debate club. All you need is a screen, some snacks and strong opinions.

Before everyone arrives

  • Choose three or four topics. Mix easy ones (“snacks on the table tonight”) with spicy ones (“every film we’ve watched together”).
  • Prepare the items for each topic so you can load them instantly.

The format

  1. Silent round. Everyone makes their own list on their phone — the tool works well on mobile.
  2. Reveal. Share screens one at a time.
  3. Debate. For each item with the biggest disagreement, the highest and lowest rankers get thirty seconds each to make their case.
  4. Group list. Build a consensus list together on the big screen.

Make it a tradition

Export the group list each time and keep them in a shared album. Looking back at last year’s rankings is half the fun.

House rules worth having

  • No changing your silent-round list after the reveal.
  • Any item moved to F tier must be defended by someone.
  • The host gets one veto per night.
