7 Tips for Making Fair, Convincing Rankings
Simple techniques to make your tier lists more consistent, more persuasive and easier to defend.

Anyone can drag items into tiers. These seven habits make your rankings hold up when the comments start rolling in.
- Define your criteria first. Write one sentence about what “better” means for this list, and stick to it.
- Compare in pairs. When torn between two tiers, compare the item directly with something already in each tier.
- Keep S tier rare. If everything is special, nothing is.
- Order within tiers. Leftmost means strongest. It adds precision without extra effort.
- Sleep on it. Come back the next day; you’ll spot at least one placement you disagree with. Your list auto-saves, so nothing is lost.
- Note your biases. Nostalgia is real. If you’re ranking something you grew up with, say so.
- Explain one controversial pick. One clear reason is more persuasive than a dozen vague ones.
Bonus: compare with a friend
Make the same list separately and compare exports. The items where you disagree most are where the most interesting conversations are.
