Tier List vs. Top 10 List: Which Should You Use?
Both rank things — but they answer different questions. Here's when to use each.

A top 10 list and a tier list both rank things, but they’re built for different jobs.
Top 10 lists: precise order
A numbered list says exactly where each item sits. That’s great when the differences are clear and you want a definitive answer — “the ten tallest buildings” — but it forces false precision when items are close. Is your 6th favourite film really better than your 7th?
Tier lists: honest groupings
Tier lists group items that are roughly equal. Two films can share A tier without a forced tiebreak. That makes tier lists more honest for subjective topics, and much quicker to make.
When to use which
| Situation | Best choice |
|---|---|
| Objective, measurable data | Top 10 |
| Subjective opinions | Tier list |
| Large number of items (20+) | Tier list |
| A single winner matters | Top 10 |
| Starting a discussion | Tier list |
Why not both?
Order items inside each tier from left to right and you get the best of both: honest groupings plus a precise ranking for anyone who wants it.
