How to Make a Tier List: A Step-by-Step Guide

Everything you need to build a clear, convincing tier list — from choosing a topic to exporting a polished image.

A tier list with gold, rose and sage rows

A good tier list does two things at once: it tells people what you think, and it starts a conversation. Here’s how to make one that does both.

1. Pick a focused topic

“Food” is too broad; “street food I’ve tried in Bangkok” is perfect. A focused topic keeps your items comparable, which makes your rankings feel fair.

2. Gather 15–30 items

Fewer than ten and the tiers look empty. More than forty and decisions start to blur. Type them in one go — separate items with commas — or upload images for a more visual list.

3. Rank with your gut first

Drag every item into a tier quickly, without overthinking. Then do a second pass. Most people find their first instinct was right about 80% of the time; the second pass is for the borderline cases.

4. Customise your tiers

The classic S-to-F scale works for most lists, but you can rename tiers to anything — “Must try”, “Worth a detour”, “Skip”. Recolour them to match your theme.

5. Export and share

Press Export PNG to download a high-resolution image. Add a one-line caption explaining your most controversial pick — that’s where the best discussions start.
